Arizona’s always been a control freak and this season she cranked it up to eleven, controlling her mind and body with a superhuman rigidity that eventually fractured when a pretty blond reached out with a soft voice and said “You are allowed to lose a little bit of control.”
In that one moment Lauren understood Arizona more than her wife has all season. Because Arizona has never been in control. Every single decision she’s made on this show has been about her giving up a piece of herself. The plane crash and her amputation were the culmination of that loss of control. Her sense of self was violated on a most fundamental level and even as she’s spent all season trying to reassert herself and her place in the universe she really hasn’t. She’s bowed to the whims of social convention and her own wife. Until that moment in the oncall room. That was Arizona finally clawing her way back to herself.
